Counseling for Anxiety and Depression

Is it worth going to counseling for anxiety and depression?

Yes! Studies have shown that even making a counseling appointment eases anxiety and depression, due to the idea that help is on the way! Talking to a therapist is often the first step in treating these issues before seeking medication.

What’s the best kind of therapy/most common approach for treating anxiety and depression?

A good therapist will use a variety of methods in working with anxiety and depression. I like using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). These methods allow you to explore the who, what, why, when and where of your issues and guide you forward into finding positive ways of living your life.

What type of counselor is best for treating anxiety and depression?

There are many types of counselors and therapists with different labels and initials after their names, it can be confusing. A psychologist or psychiatrist may prescribe medication but may not offer counseling. It’s most helpful to talk through your thoughts and feelings (counseling) even if you are prescribed medication. Look for a licensed counselor or therapist who explains their training and describes what kind of problems they treat in their practice. Ask if they offer counseling, medication management, etc.
